The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has warned the public against fraudulent e-mails pretending to be from the poll body.

In a public advisory on Friday, the poll body advised the public to be cautions against e-mails, particularly from the address, comelec.infoupdate@protonmail.com, and a certain individual posing as a Comelec staff.

“The public is strongly advised to exercise caution and vigilance regarding emails that appear to originate from the Commission on Elections and request(ing for) personal or sensitive information,” it said.

“No Department within the Comelec has a Stakeholder Relations Division and Atty. Maria Carmela B. Gonzales is not a Comelec Director or employee. Official Comelec email addresses use the @comelec.gov.ph domain name,” it added.

The Comelec noted that the public should not trust any e-mail that does not originate from an address bearing this domain name.

“Apart from the suspicious email address, do not immediately click any links contained in the email. It could be a phishing scam that leads to the theft and malicious use of your information.Keep your personal and sensitive information safe and secure,” it said.

The Comelec reminded the public to communicate with the official email listed in the “Contact Us” section of www.comelec.gov.ph or by visiting its offices. (Ferdinand Patinio/PNA)
