Apple Launches Apple Pay Contactless Payment Service In The Philippines

Spotlight

Apple has officially launched its Apple Pay digital wallet and contactless payment service in the Philippines, enabling local cardholders to do secure transactions through their Apple devices. This allows eligible Apple users to use credit and debit cards through their Apple devices for in-store, in-app, and web-based purchases nationwide.

The launch marks the first time financial institutions based in the Philippines are able to tokenize locally issued payment cards for integration into the Apple Wallet ecosystem. Initial banking support for the national rollout is provided through major domestic financial institutions, those of which are UnionBank, GoTyme Bank, Metrobank, and China Bank. Cardholders from these participating institutions can link their payment cards to compatible devices, including the iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro.

Banking Support And Security Infrastructure

Jennifer Bailey, Vice President of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet at Apple, confirmed the service implementation in the region, stating that the feature offers users a secure and private method to complete purchases. According to Apple, actual credit or debit card numbers are not stored on the physical device or on company servers, nor are they shared with merchants during transaction processing. Instead, the service utilizes a unique Device Account Number that is encrypted and stored in a secure chip, with each purchase authorized using a one-time passcode.

Retail transactions through Apple Pay can be conducted at any commercial location equipped with near-field communication point-of-sale terminals. Participating merchant partners supporting Apple Pay at launch include Jollibee, Power Mac Center, Beyond the Box, Rustan’s, WalterMart, Ayala Malls, Shake Shack, and 7-Eleven. E-commerce platforms including Shopee and foodpanda have added Apple Pay for digital checkout operations.

Retail Integration And Global Expansion

To complete physical purchases, users authenticate transactions using Face ID, Touch ID, or a device passcode before placing their device near a contactless terminal reader. Customers utilizing the service continue to earn standard rewards, points, and consumer protection benefits provided by their respective card-issuing banks.

The debut of Apple Pay in the Philippines expands the platform’s global availability to more than 90 countries and regions worldwide. The rollout follows regulatory frameworks overseen by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas for digital financial technology and supports ongoing initiatives to accelerate digital retail payment adoption across the domestic economy. Additional card issuers and commercial partners are expected to launch support for the service in subsequent phases.
