The Commission on Elections (Comelec) expanded voter registration access in Mimaropa after conducting a Special Satellite Registration at the Romblon District Jail on Wednesday, enlisting 77 new voters.
In a press statement, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) 4-B (Mimaropa) spokesperson Jail Officer 3 Joefrie Anglo said the registrants included 74 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) and three jail personnel.
The initiative forms part of Comelec’s intensified efforts across the Mimaropa region to reach marginalized and hard-to-access sectors and enable their participation in the electoral process.
Conducted in coordination with jail authorities led by acting Jail Warden, Jail Senior Insp. Emely Mallen, the activity was carried out in an orderly and secure manner within the facility.
Anglo said the program highlights the government’s commitment to inclusive governance by safeguarding the voting rights of all eligible citizens, including those in custodial settings.
“Through initiatives like this, we ensure that no sector is left behind in the democratic process. Even our PDL are given the chance to take part in shaping our nation’s future,” he said.
He added that the activity also had a positive impact on PDLs’ morale, noting that the opportunity to register reinforces their sense of dignity and belonging.
“This reminds them that they remain part of society and still have a voice in the country’s future,” Anglo said.
BJMP 4-B reiterated its support for the Comelec’s programs, emphasizing that civic participation plays a vital role in the rehabilitation and reintegration of PDLs into mainstream society.
The activity concluded smoothly, underscoring the strong partnership between Comelec and the BJMP in advancing accessible, secure, and inclusive electoral services across the Mimaropa region. (PR)
