The Surigao City government launched the Monthly Provision Direct Aid program on Wednesday, aimed at providing financial support to indigent single parents in the city.
A total of 196 indigent solo parents from 54 barangays received PHP3,000 each during the launch, which covers the period from January to June this year.
“The program aims to provide the needed financial support to marginalized solo parents who are also active members of local organizations in their respective barangays,” the Surigao City Information Office said in a statement on Thursday.
The initiative, led by Surigao City Mayor Pablo Yves Dumlao II, will also support the needs of children of single parents in the city.
Two beneficiaries, 24-year-old Lanie from Barangay Luna and 28-year-old Jocelyn from Barangay Ipil, appreciate the city government’s new initiative.
Both single parents said the monthly financial provision will help them secure milk and nutritious food for their children.
“I do not have a steady income, but I also participate in various activities within our barangay. This program from the city government is a great help to single parents, especially mothers who solely provide for their children’s needs,” Jocelyn said in an interview on Thursday.
Surigao City Vice Mayor Alfonso Casurra led the launch, joined by the City Social Welfare and Development Office and several other key department heads from the city government. (PNA)
