The Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN) has reaffirmed its commitment to help in the modernization of the Philippine Navy (PN), following the visit of one of its top officials to the Philippines.

In a statement on Thursday, the PN said ROKN deputy chief of naval operations for logistics, Rear Admiral Shin Yu Chuan, made a courtesy call on PN flag officer in command, Vice Admiral Jose Ma. Ambrosio Ezpeleta, at the PN headquarters in Manila on Wednesday.

“Rear Admiral Shin, in turn, reaffirmed the ROKN’s commitment to strengthening cooperation in logistics, training, and technology,” the PN said. “He emphasized the importance of sustaining mutual support through initiatives that enhance interoperability and promote efficiency between the two navies.”

Ezpeleta, meanwhile, expressed his appreciation for the ROKN’s yearslong and consistent support to the PN, “highlighting South Korea’s role as a reliable defense partner since the early stages of the PN’s modernization,” the PN said.

ROKN’s support to its Philippine counterpart includes donation of naval vessels and provision of vital ship components and advanced technical assistance.

The PN said South Korea’s contributions have significantly enhanced its operational readiness and capability development.

The PN added it remains committed to deepening its cooperation with the ROKN in pursuit of self-reliant defense capabilities and enhanced regional maritime security. (PNA)
