The Ilocos Norte provincial government has started distributing cash assistance to village workers in recognition of their contributions to community development.
On Wednesday, a total of 2,380 village workers from Bacarra and Vintar towns received PHP4,000 each in cash assistance from the Ilocos Norte provincial government, marking the first batch of beneficiaries for this year.
The distribution, held at the covered courts of both towns, was led by Governor Cecilia Araneta-Marcos, who thanked the village frontliners for their dedication and sacrifices in serving their communities.
“This is good for the new year—at least you have cash on hand to start anew,” the governor said, commending their role in maintaining health and safety at the grassroots level.
She noted that the cash aid, which covers more than 19,000 village workers across the province’s 559 barangays, is part of the provincial government’s annual tradition of giving cash incentives to barangay workers as a gesture of appreciation for their volunteerism and community service.
“Thank you for the unexpected blessing. It is a privilege to be of service to the community,” said Wilma Viernes, treasurer of Barangay 9 Sta. Angela in Laoag City, in a phone interview on Thursday.
Barangay peacekeeping officer Veejay Jose of Barangay 22 San Guillermo said the annual cash assistance is encouraging for grassroots workers.
“We are glad and thankful for the gift. It’s inspiring to know that our work in the community is being recognized,” he told the Philippine News Agency.
Jose’s mother, Virginia, a village health worker, also expressed appreciation, saying the aid helps meet daily needs. She added that beyond the financial support, serving the community—especially in promoting health and nutrition—is deeply fulfilling, noting that many village workers serve voluntarily and receive only minimal honoraria.
