The city government, for the first time, distributed PHP7 million to 1,000 indigent solo parents here on Wednesday.
In a statement, Mayor Rolando Uy said the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) was tasked to implement the local government’s obligation under Republic Act 11861, also known as the Expanded Solo Parents’ Welfare Act.
“This is the first time in our city that there is a subsidy for solo parents,” he said.
The City Council earlier approved that the CSWDO release a one-time subsidy of PHP7,000 to qualified solo parents yearly.
Under the law, a PHP1,000 monthly cash subsidy from the Department of Social Welfare and Development is also available to qualified solo parents nationwide.
Barangays are also responsible for keeping an updated list of indigent solo parents in their areas to qualify for the next subsidy cycle. (PNA)
