Antique – Persons deprived of liberty (PDL) in an Antique jail hope to earn more from making parol (Christmas lanterns) and cheer up their families this holiday season.

San Jose de Buenavista District Jail Warden Remy Canja said in an interview on Thursday that 139 PDLs inside the jail facility are engaged in parol making.

“The PDLs started this early in making Christmas parol in the hope that they could sell and earn some amount to be sent to their families,” he said.

Since they started this week, their first client was Governor Paolo Everardo, who ordered two pieces. They are also accepting orders from local chief executives and private individuals.

“The prices range from PHP1,500 to PHP2,500 per piece,” Canja said.

A 34-year-old PDL was full of gratitude that he learned how to make the craft.

“After my release, I already know how to make a parol,” he said in an interview.

He said that he is also hopeful that they could sell many parol this Christmas time so they could send some money to their families for their celebration.

“I intend to send the money I could earn to my wife and child so that even if I am in prison, they could still feel I care for them,” he said.

In addition to earning money, it also keeps them occupied so they will not get bored while serving their sentences.

Most of the PDLs have then been remitted to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology District Jail for illegal drug cases. (PNA)
