Moira Dela Torre and Parokya ni Edgar team up for a new take on heartbreak with “San Ka Na,” whose music video, released September 16, brings a surprisingly playful and unexpected visual to the song’s story of longing and missing someone.
The track captures that familiar feeling of searching for someone who hasn’t completely left, but somehow already feels far away. But instead of leaning entirely into the heaviness of heartbreak, the music video takes a more lighthearted route, bringing together Parokya ni Edgar and surprise cameos from Mimiyuuuh and Janine Berdin.
The collaboration came about rather casually. Moira recalls hanging out and jamming with Chito Miranda where they initially worked on a different song. Eventually, they tried “San Ka Na,” which Miranda preferred and went on to write his own verse for. Parokya ni Edgar later became part of the track, contributing the instrumental heard in the song.
The music video went through several concepts before arriving at its final form. Originally envisioned as a more serious narrative, the team eventually decided to embrace the limitations they faced during production and turn them into part of the creative direction. “What if we just try to pinpoint every location that you say every time you say ‘San Ka Na’?” Moira shares.
That idea became the foundation for a video where Moira seems to be everywhere except where she is actually supposed to be- moving from one unexpected situation to another while trying to avoid reality.
The video’s humor also comes with moments that carry deeper meaning. From Mimiyuuuh’s unexpected laundry cameo to Janine Berdin’s toilet appearance, scenes that initially seem random play with ideas of boundaries, avoidance, and the ways people sometimes make light of complicated situations. As Moira puts it, “It’s funny, but it’s real.”
And then there’s the astronaut suit.
The unexpected scene came from director ER’s concept of having Moira appear to be floating away before being brought back to reality. Moira then suggested connecting the scene’s knock to one from the beginning of the video.
For Moira, one of the most memorable parts of filming was simply spending time with Parokya ni Edgar. She recalls riding around Araneta City in the back of a pickup truck with the band and their gear while hearing stories about how they started and their friendship through the years. Another unforgettable moment? Finding herself in an astronaut suit at a karinderya, eating silog with the band.
Ultimately, Moira wants listeners to experience the video in their own way. “I just hope they make it their own. Sana lang magustuhan nila… Sana ma-enjoy nila.”
With its unexpected cameos, playful storytelling, and out-of-this-world moments, “San Ka Na” shows a lighter side of Moira while leaving audiences to find their own meaning in the story.
