Langkawi International Airport (LGK) was named the winner of the Under 5 Million Passengers category at the Routes Asia 2026 Awards on April 14, 2026, during the three-day Routes Asia forum held in Xi’an, China. The award recognises airports that have demonstrated exceptional marketing support for their airline partners and sustained progress in route development.
The recognition arrived as Langkawi recorded its strongest commercial aviation performance in recent years. In 2025, the airport handled approximately 2.9 million passengers, representing growth of nearly 12% compared to the previous year, supported by a 17% rise in scheduled seat capacity. Over the same period, Langkawi expanded its airline network to seven operating carriers, adding both scheduled international services and charter connections from Warsaw, Tashkent, and Chengdu.
A Competitive Field
Langkawi was one of five award winners recognised at the Routes Asia 2026 Networking Evening. Adelaide Airport in Australia was named the Overall Winner and also claimed the 5–20 Million Passengers category for a second consecutive year, having handled nine million passengers in 2025, up 21% year-on-year. Melbourne Airport took the Over 20 Million Passengers award after recording 37 million passengers in 2025 and expanding its airline portfolio to 42 carriers, the highest in its history. Sanya Tourism Board of China won the Destination Award, recognised for supporting 43 international air routes connecting the coastal city to 33 cities across 18 countries. Qantas Airways won the Airline Award, cited for adding more than 40 new domestic routes, 14 new domestic points, 25 new international routes, and 12 new international destinations since pandemic recovery.
Langkawi’s Strategic Position
Langkawi’s Routes Asia win carries weight beyond the award itself. The island is Malaysia’s only UNESCO Global Geopark and one of the country’s primary duty-free leisure gateways. Its airport, operated by Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad, sits at the intersection of Malaysia’s national tourism ambitions and its aviation network development strategy. The government has positioned Visit Malaysia 2026 as a year of elevated inbound tourism targets, and Langkawi is a central pillar of that effort.
Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad Managing Director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani has stated that the airport plays a strategic role in supporting Malaysia’s ambition to become the most connected country in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly as international demand for resort and nature-based travel continues to strengthen. The 17% increase in seat capacity at Langkawi during 2025 reflects that commitment, with Malaysia Airports coordinating route development through its Network Development Programme in partnership with Tourism Malaysia and the Langkawi Development Authority.
The Routes Asia Platform
Routes Asia is the principal route development event for the Asia-Pacific region, convened by Informa Group and attended by airlines, airports, tourism authorities, and aviation stakeholders. The 2026 edition was held in Xi’an from April 14–16, the first time the event was staged in that city. The awards within the forum are judged by airline professionals in the airport and destination categories, and by an editorial panel in the airline category.
Finalists were assessed on the quality of their marketing support for airline partners, collaborative route development initiatives, and measurable growth outcomes. Langkawi’s win reflects assessments made by working airline network planners. Routes Asia 2027 is confirmed for New Delhi, India, from March 16–18, 2027.
