The provincial government of Dinagat Islands has begun facilitating the release of roofing materials intended for families whose houses were severely damaged during the onslaught of Typhoon Tino last month.
Governor Nilo Demerey Jr. led the distribution of roofing materials, which began on Friday and continued on Saturday.
A total of 7,230 pieces of corrugated zinc sheets, coupled with 1,446 kg. of umbrella nails and 723 cans of sealants, were distributed to 723 families from seven towns in the province.
Most of the releases were done in Loreto town, where 590 families received 5,900 corrugated zinc sheets, 1,180 kg. of umbrella nails, and 590 cans of sealants.
“This will allow the affected families to repair the damaged roofs of their houses to protect them from rain, wind, and sun,” Demerey said in a message on Saturday.
It will also reduce the vulnerability of families, making them less exposed to health risks, waterborne diseases, and accidents caused by unsafe housing, he added.
Aside from the 590 residents in Loreto, other towns in the province also have support, including Tubajon with 47 families, Libjo with 12, Basilisa with 22, San Jose with 36, Dinagat with four, and Cagdianao with 12.
“Simeon,” 53, a father of six and a resident of Loreto, received 10 pieces of corrugated zinc, 2 kg. of umbrella nails, and one can of sealant.
“The provincial government helped my family ease the financial burden in the repair of my damaged roof through these materials. I am very thankful to the government,” Simeon said.
Another household member, “Divina,” 28, a resident of San Jose and a mother of two, said her family will now be safe with the complete roofing materials they received from the provincial government.
Demerey said the release of the roofing materials demonstrates accountability and responsiveness, and reinforces the role of the provincial government in disaster recovery. (PNA)
