President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. praised First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos for her grit and intelligence, describing her as “smart,” “effective,” and a driving force behind key government initiatives.
In the fifth episode of his podcast aired Wednesday, Marcos cited the First Lady’s instrumental role in the restoration of the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City.
He lauded his wife’s efforts to bring the PICC “back to its old glory.”
“She just doesn’t let go of something. Once she gets hold of it and decides to do it, she actually gets it done. And she’s very effective,” Marcos said. “She’s a smart girl. Her legal training serves her well.”
Marcos recalled being amazed by the transformation of the PICC, noting that the historic venue now showcases prominent Filipino artworks, including pieces by National Artists Jose Joya and Arturo Luz, many of which had gone unnoticed over the years.
“It was really shiny and bright. We were featuring once again all of the artwork,” he noted, referring to iconic pieces that are now proudly displayed once more.
He expressed elation over the successful reopening of the PICC, just in time for the Philippines’ hosting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit and Related Summits in 2026.
“Thank God we have the PICC,” the President added, highlighting its importance as a world-class venue ready for global diplomacy.
The interview also turned personal, as Marcos shared anecdotes about his family life, cooking on weekends, and bonding with his three children — Ilocos Norte First District Rep. Ferdinand Alexander “Sandro,” Joseph Simon, and William Vincent.
Marcos shared insights into his role as a father to his three sons and how he relates to them individually.
“I’ve always treated them as whole persons,” he shared. “I never did baby talk. I thought that was the most silly thing to do. I just dealt with them as people.”
He noted that while each son has a distinct personality, they have developed a close and unique bond over the years.
“Each one is very different. But they all crack me up. They all make me laugh a lot,” he said with a smile.
When asked what advice he would give to any woman hoping to become his daughter-in-law, the President laughed and said, “Well, I’m at the stage in my life where I would say, yes, please. But I would also add: good luck. Knowing my sons, good luck with that.” (PNA)
